First and Only Deputy in Boise County to be Fatally Shot is Now Recognized

Boise County -- V. W. Coffin was fatally shot in Boise County while attempting to arrest a man on April 18, 1883. Known by his friends as Walt Coffin, 31, he had spent much of his time prospecting and worked several mines. He had been quickly deputized, after volunteering to help bring in a wanted man. Unfortunately, he was killed soon afterward, in the line of duty.
“National Police Week” begins next week, to honor our fallen officers. On May 13th, a very special Candlelight Vigil will be held in Washington, D.C., recognizing eight additional names of Idaho officers, including that of Walter Coffin.
