The Pelican Creek Stage Robbery

My sister Jo uncovered this story in researching John Wheeler so it is her story. This story diverges a bit from the gold rush days but does involve two individuals who were early settlers at Dutch Town west of Buena Vista Bar in 1863. One was Dr. William Labur and the other was John Wheeler. Wheeler was the better known of the two around Idaho City. He had also filed a claim on a ditch out of Grimes Creek east of the present day Golden Age mine about a mile. It went down the north side of Grimes Creek to a drainage just east of the switchback on the road that crosses Grimes Creek and goes up over Grimes Pass. How much he worked it is unknown for sure, but the placer mining effort is still visible in the drainage and down on the flat below. The drainage Wheeler worked was on the north side...
